Lexical Bundles in Native English Speakers' and Thai Writers' Dissertations

The purposes of this corpus-driven study were to compare the use four-word lexical bundles between native English and Thai dissertation writings. Two language corpora, roughly 1,000,000 words apiece, gathered from dissertations in field Language Teaching written by both groups writers. Each corpus was subdivided into three sub-corpora, namely, Introduction, Methodology, Results Discussions sub-corpora. frameworks employed for structural functional analysis Salazar's (2011) adaptations Biber et al.’s (1999) Hyland’s (2008a). performed using concordance software AntConc . results showed that writers overused comparison with speaking each part dissertations, especially Discussion section, which could result institutional factors such as expectation practice universities expect Ph.D. students be more critical findings offer implication. revealed overuse verb-structured throughout sub-corpora writers, likely stem non-native speaker's failure employ noun- preposition-structured effectively. proportion functions section shared a relatively similar trend, indicating speakers conformed same convention writing.
